Canada Bans Cruise Ships Until February 2022

The Government of Canada has banned all pleasure craft from Canada waters until February 2022.

  • Adventure-seeking pleasure craft is still prohibited from entering Arctic waters.
  • Passenger vessels carrying more than 12 people are still prohibited from entering Arctic coastal waters, including Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, and the Labrador Coast.
  • Cruise vessels carrying 100 or more people are still prohibited from operating in Canadian waters.

Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra made the announcement of the order. “Cruise vessels in Canadian waters pose a risk to our health care systems. The government of Canada will continue to evaluate the situation and make changes as necessary to ensure the health and safety of all Canadians,” the release said.

While it seemed unlikely that the Disney Wonder would be doing Alaskan cruises in 2021, I think some were hoping that we might see some cruises begin at the end of summer. Disney Cruise Lines had cancelled the repositioning Panama Canal cruise already. That signalled that the Alaskan season was unlikely to happen.
